Modern Prairie style transforms a Silicon Valley 1960’s Ranch style home.
CONNECT
Many Silicon Valley homes are relics of the 1960s semiconductor boom and today’s homeowners want to modernize these California Ranchers. The re-creation of this typical rancher in Saratoga, California was no exception.Purchased from the original owner, this 2,500 square foot, four-bedroom, two and one-half bath Saratoga, California home was ripe for a remodel. And our clients were focused on achieving their dream home.
On Houzz, they discovered the Modern Prairie style and came to us, interested in building on that vision. The RemodelWest design/build business model key value is LISTEN TO THE CLIENT. We respect our clients’ vision and help them realize it, working in a collaborative team effort that they appreciated from day one.
CREATE
The common area of the home’s original floor plan includes five separate rooms, creating a compartmentalized and isolated feeling—not right for a busy social family of today.
The first task was to create one large open space for them to enjoy by combining the entry, living room, dining room, kitchen, nook and family room. No easy task, this involves more than just knocking out a few walls.
In the country’s most intense seismic zone, removing walls triggers additional work to improve structural integrity of the building. We installed beams to support the roof and solid shear walls to stabilize the building. Though it took much of the budget, our clients see the benefit every time they view the backyard pool from their kitchen in front.
CONSTRUCT
To construct their inside/outside living experience, we chose the Nana Wall to create an opening to the pool area spanning over 20 feet. Bill and Lead Designer Kirk Goodere maximized the openings and transition to the interior/exterior stone detail.
We selected a door to modernize the home and tease what’s to come inside. Designed by the team at RemodelWest, the door was sourced from the TruStile new modern collection.
With a love of cooking and entertaining, our client had specific ideas for the look and use of the kitchen. Lead Designer Sarah Spiroff, CKD, CBD spotted the perfect finish from premier cabinetry makers Crystal Cabinets. The cabinet doors mix traditional and modern elements, featuring solid maple with gray stain contrasting a deep brown finish.
Placing a cooktop on the island can pose ventilation and visual challenges. Determined not to compromise, our client discovered a new system by Best that’s flush-mounted, requiring us to reconstruct the ceiling.
For a modern twist, we combined two Quartz countertops: Pental Quartz Serra on the island and Pental Quartz Calcatta for the kitchen counter, complementing the cabinetry.
Flooring is a rustic, durable hand-scraped prefinished Hickory wood crafted by Sheoga of Ohio Amish country to balance with adjacent materials and create a warm, unified look.

Client Testimonial
We are very happy with our “new” home, thanks to everyone at Remodel West. They worked hard with us every step of the way, from design through construction, and more than 2 years after finishing the project, they are still very responsive and helpful when questions arise that might be related to the remodeling work.
Through the design process, they allowed us to dream about what we would want ideally and helped us mold that into a realistic design that also fit our budget. We opted to live in half the house throughout the construction and survived it, thanks in large part to the accommodations the Remodel West team made to help us survive without a kitchen for almost 6 months and the fact that they were able to keep the project moving largely on schedule despite all the usual challenges during remodeling.
The subcontractors they brought in did excellent work; Bill Reid gives you the feeling that he is also vested in the success of your remodel — he was determined to build a unique design in our kitchen counter and skylight although they had to troubleshoot a lot details to construct some of the challenging components.
He also upgraded some outdoor cabinet doors on his own because he felt they were important to the final results. Bill and his team at Remodel West are professional, responsible, and take pride in their work — all of which made our remodeling experience smooth and successful experience.
I highly recommend them!
